I wrote this little ditty at a songwriting workshop with Edwina Hayes in Melbourne, Derbyshire. I came with the music in my head, two lines – and an idea. I’ve been fascinated by how people read into songs, and make them personal to them. I do it myself – there will be a song or even a couple of lines in a song that really speaks to me – on a very personal level – perhaps even finding a meaning or emotion that was never intended. I guess speaks to the power of interpretation. So often people argue over the meaning of a song, a poem, a play or a film – not realising how much they bring to that interpretation. I’ve always been intrigued by songs that refer to themselves such as Carly Simons’s “You’re So Vain” or Elton John’s “Your Song” – and they fact they refuse to name who they are about – to the degree that they could be about anyone. For me the song is about being there for someone – come what may…
