Today is my last working day of the year – and my last blogpost of the year as well. And like many I’m looking forward to serious bit of R&R. This year has been eventful one. We had two weddings in the family – within the space of three weeks. And one of those weddings was my own. I now have complete deck of anniversaries to celebrate in the year – the day we first met, the day I proposed and the day we got married. Another highlight was moving to a more rural life in the Derbyshire Dales. Looking back since I left home I don’t think I’ve stay in any place for longer than 3 years. Even when I’ve stayed in the same city I’ve had half-dozen addresses – something that drives my long-suffering mother round the bend. Then, of course there was that life lived out of suitcase, on the road – as jobbing instructor. Recently, I have increased the number of EU VMUGs – and its been a sharp reminder of how I used to spend weeks and weeks away from home. Looking back to the previous decade I’m amazed how much time I spent in taxis, airports, hotels and business parks! Anyway, I digress – the move feels different. This time I think we have found a place to put roots down and settle.
Next year will mark a special anniversary in my career as well. In January, 2014 it will be 10 years since I joined the VMware Community Forums which marked the real beginning of my engagement with the community. Before then I’d lurked on the Community Boards as I learnt all about ESX 2.x and VirtualCenter 1.x. But in January, 2004 I created my community account – and began to feel confident to answer questions, as well as ask them. It’s hard to imagine that time has passed so quickly, and looking back I would have never have suspected that small act would have been so life changing. The interesting thing about virtualization and VMware, is how its not just changed the fact of the datacenter, but also transformed the lives and careers of so many of us. For this is I humbly grateful. I know I wouldn’t be where I am today without the community which I know overtime I have benefited from more, than I have contributed. Thank you to you one and all.
So in that spirit, I just like to wish everyone who follows the blog and everyone in our community – a very merry christmas and happy new year. See you again in 2014…
