In my first ever “VMwareWag” since joining VMware I talk to Cormac Hogan about the changes and enhancements in vSphere5.1 centered around storage. Cormac works within the Technical Marketing team within VMware. As you might know the folks in TECHNICAL marketing, are more TECHNICAL than marketeers! Cormac has started his own blog at cormachogan.com and tweets at @VMwareStorage – and of course he’s a regular contributor to the blogs at VMware especially in the Storage blog.
As you might know I used to run a podcast theme called the “Vendorwag”. It was a 1-2-1 QA session with vendors who had complementary technologies in the space of virtualization and cloud. Now that I’m with VMware now I’m more freely able to start a similiar series with folks internal to the company. It’s my intention to keep these on a technical level, and in Cormac Hogan I’m sure you will see and hear what I mean.
I’ve know Cormac off-and-on for a number of years back when I was VMware Certified Instructor (VCI). My main job at VMworld back then was attending as many sessions as I could in the hope of picking up useful tips/tricks/info that I could feedback into my courses. I remember one session distinctly was “The Top 10 Storage Support Calls” (or words to that affect) and it was presented by Cormac.
There’s a couple of parts to this series of podcasts with Cormac. We have part1/2 on vSphere 5.1 Storage enhancements – and some later stage I hope to record a QA session all about the VSA. Hopefully in the new year I can have Cormac back to speak about some of the storage changes that currently NDA or in Tech Preview stages. I’ve asked Cormac to get back to me when he’s ready. The content that Cormac presents is quite technically detailed and you might prefer to view the video based presentation, rather than just the audio as the two go hand in hand. Much of this content was presented at VMworld.
Part 1 covers these topics:
- VMFS File Sharing increased
- Space Efficient Sparse Virtual Disks
- New vSphere Storage APIs
- Support for 5-node MSCS Clusters
